As an Osteopath in West Sussex, here are some of the Frequently Asked Questions that people ask…
Do I need a referral from my GP to see an osteopath?
No. You can normally make an appointment directly with a registered osteopath.
What is the difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy?
There is overlap between the professions because both can assess and manage musculoskeletal problems. Training and treatment approaches can differ, and individual practitioners may use different combinations of hands-on care, exercise and rehabilitation.
Is osteopathic treatment painful?
Treatment should be adapted to you. Some already-sensitive areas may feel tender during examination or treatment, but you should tell Stephanie if anything is uncomfortable so that the technique can be changed.
Does osteopathic treatment always involve manipulation?
No. Stephanie predominantly uses gentle osteopathic techniques, including soft-tissue work, mobilisation, cranial approaches and exercise or rehabilitation advice where appropriate. Manipulation is used only occasionally, when clinically appropriate, and always with your consent.
How many treatments will I need?
This cannot be decided accurately before you have been assessed. At your initial consultation, Stephanie will discuss the likely number of treatments and create a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and goals.
When might an osteopath refer me for further medical assessment?
If your history or examination suggests that further investigation or another healthcare professional is more appropriate, Stephanie can advise you to seek the relevant medical assessment.
Can older people see an osteopath?
Yes. Treatment can be modified according to age, general health, bone and joint health, medication and individual preference. A gentle approach and appropriate exercise may be used when suitable.
Is there parking at The Pain Relief Clinic in Hassocks?
Yes. Free parking is available immediately outside the clinic, with additional free parking in the lay-by opposite.
